Mira, Portugal, October 11, 2018. Aquaculture startup Oceano Fresco has just been awarded a grant from the Fundo Azul program to develop its Industry 4.0 digital aquaculture project in partnership with Digidelta Software. The project will lead directly to the optimization of the production of native species of bivalves, to be carried out in Oceano Fresco's future Biomarine Center, in Nazaré, on the coast of central Portugal.
The Fundo Azul program, managed by Portugal's Directory-General for Sea Policies (DGPM), has approved the financing of 450.000 Euros, corresponding to 90% of the total investment of 500.000 Euros to be committed by the two promoters in the project, which is part of the Country’s strategy for sustainable development of the economy of the sea.
Bernardo Ferreira de Carvalho, founder and CEO of Oceano Fresco, stated that "all of our bivalve production units, starting with the Nazaré hatchery, will be supported by innovative farming and biotechnology tools which will allow the development of varieties of bivalves with a superior productive performance. For this we will apply a new tool developed in partnership with Digidelta Software, our ICT partner in the project, which will allow the collection and analysis of seed data from which alerts and commands will be generated. The platform will allow optimizing the production of the hatchery on a day-to-day basis, as well as the future development of predictive models for the optimization and acceleration of production."
The funding will be awarded immediately, in the form of a zero-interest loan.
Oceano Fresco pioneers the emerging field of science-based aquaculture, specifically targeting the bivalve production market. The company has a track record of success in attracting public and private funding, which it has applied to the development of key assets including a new hatchery and BioMarine Center in Nazaré and a grow-out farm off the coast of the Algarve, in Portugal. Oceano Fresco brings together a team of internationally renowned entrepreneurs, managers, advisers, scientists and technicians, and aims to become the global market leader in shellfish aquaculture, contributing to higher levels of sustainability in food production worldwide.
